WHY IS UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH SO IMPORTANT?
One in four people will have a mental health problem at some point in their lives.
1/2 of all mental health problems are established by age 14.
3/4 of all mental health problems are established by age 24.
In England, the number of anti-depressant items prescribed has more than doubled in the last decade.
Over 600,000 cases of work related stress are reported annually.
At work, employers have a legal responsibility to help their employees and make reasonable adjustments under equalities legislation.
The 'Thriving at Work' reports outlines a framework of core standards that all employers can, and should, put in place to support their staff. By appointing a first aider for mental health, employers can actively support and improve the mental health of those within their workplace.
For schools, the DfE has recommended that all schools should have a designated mental health lead by 2025. This is a positive step forward to support our young people as they progress through their education.
MY BACKGROUND
I have been a psychology teacher and curriculum leader for over 15 years and have loved teaching students about the way our minds work.
I am also a mother to two daughters. Life appears very different to what many of us may recall from our childhoods, which presents new challenges and obstacles that our children will need to learn to overcome.
It is essential that we aim to understand mental health, to not only enjoy our own lives but to support others.
As a qualified metal health first aid instructor and corporate mental health first aid facilitator, I am able to now teach beyond my classroom and tell others about what I feel so passionate about.
